IDRIS MURPHY’S interest in cliché-verre commenced when he was looking at certain graphic works by Camille Corot. He came across the Corot prints while on a working visit to Paris in 1986.
Initially he thought that these works were etchings, however on closer inspection and further reading realised that they were heliographs (variously termed cliché-verre, autographie héliographique, dessin héliographique etc.).
He also found that these free-flowing images which had excited him so much had a quality he hadn’t believed to be possible through traditional etching or other printmaking processes – with the possible exception of lithography.
